Postpartum Doula

Empowering Support for Your Life-Changing Journey

This season of your life is exciting and bound to be life-changing. A well-planned support team is one of the essential tools for you to use to have the most satisfactory postpartum period. I am grateful that you’re considering making me a part of that team!

As a postpartum doula, I hope to provide you with the best information on postpartum and infant care and support. In addition, I will supply you with tools to nurture your new relationship with your spouse and child and encourage a safe space for personal growth and emotional support.

You may have questions about postpartum doula services and my philosophy of care. If something is not answered in this page, please feel free to ask me any questions after our initial interview.

What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula comes with endless resources, support, and guidance during the transition into parenthood, from the first few weeks to a few months postpartum.

Why Hire A Postpartum Doula?

Bringing a baby home marks an exhilarating period filled with countless “firsts.” Having a postpartum doula to navigate this transition can profoundly benefit parents, the newborn, and other family members. The decision to hire a postpartum doula depends on you and how you anticipate your postpartum needs will be met. Some families choose to hire a postpartum doula while they are still pregnant, perhaps based on a previous experience that encouraged them to secure a doula early on. Others begin their postpartum journey on their own and later recognize the benefits of having a doula or prefer to wait and see if they will require the support.

The timing of when you hire a postpartum doula is completely up to you! Even if you do not hire one ahead of time, researching and knowing your options while pregnant can be helpful for when you end up searching for one after you give birth. The postpartum doula begins by meeting with the family before birth to assess their needs and continues to provide support after the baby arrives. Tailoring assistance to meet the family’s specific requirements, the postpartum doula offers education, companionship, and nonjudgmental support. This includes aiding with newborn care, facilitating family adjustments, preparing meals, and light household chores. Furthermore, she provides evidence-based guidance on infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, as well as techniques for soothing the infant and coping skills for new parents. When necessary, she makes appropriate referrals to additional resources.

How does a Postpartum Doula work with a family?

Working with your family means that the doula offers encouragement, advice, and guidance as everyone navigates the new transition. Support for the family often looks like suggestions for infant feeding and bath time, help with preparing dinner, and more. Yes, a professionally trained postpartum doula makes you the priority. This includes your mental and emotional health, your physical healing from birth, and your sleep. Those needs are often met when a postpartum doula supports another aspect of the family/home. When you feel your baby is taken care of, the kitchen is organized, and your lunch is made, your overall well-being has a chance to feel restful and cared for. A postpartum doula tends to do what you need, sometimes even without needing direction (as long as it’s within their scope of practice).

The work you and your postpartum doula do together can look different than someone else’s work with them. This is because each family’s needs are unique. Therefore your experience and schedule with your postpartum doula will be unique and individualized to fit you and your needs. Depending on the doula and their availability, you may have them do a shift, ranging anywhere from 2 hours long to 4 hours long. Some doulas will even do longer if needed! You can choose to have your doula with you once a week or several days a week; again, it’s entirely between you and your doula. For example, we have done three 6-hour day shifts a week with one family and two 4-hour evening shifts a week with another family. It all depends on your needs, your doula’s availability and offerings, and when you need support.
