What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula offers support for new families in the first weeks and months after birth. Doulas provide information, practical help, and emotional care as you adjust to life with your baby.

Why Hire A Postpartum Doula?

Bringing a baby home marks an exhilarating period filled with countless “firsts.” A doula can help ease the transition for you, your baby, and your family. Some families hire a doula before the baby arrives. Others wait and realize they want more help. There is no wrong time to explore your options.

A postpartum doula can support you with:

  • Newborn care and baby soothing
  • Feeding guidance and recovery support
  • Meal prep, tidying, and light household help
  • Emotional support and trusted referrals
  • Evidence-based education and resources

All care is based on what your family needs most and is tailored to your specific requirements and style.

How does a Postpartum Doula work with a family?

Each family is different. Your care will be, too. Doulas often help with feeding, bathing, meals, or organizing. Your healing and rest are a priority, often supported by the help you receive around the home.

Support schedules can look like:

  • Typically 2-4 hours per visit
  • Day or evening shifts
  • One visit a week or several
  • Flexible schedules based on your needs

You and your doula decide together what works best.

A professionally trained postpartum doula makes you the priority. This includes your mental and emotional health, your physical healing from birth, and your sleep. Those needs are often met when a postpartum doula supports another aspect of the family/home. When you feel your baby is taken care of, the kitchen is organized, and your lunch is made, your overall well-being has a chance to feel restful and cared for.

Emotional Support

The postpartum period is a beautiful period filled with emotional moments. I will share the many resources I have available to help empower and comfort you during this time.

Light Housekeeping

Let me take the cleaning off your plate! As your doula, I can help you around the house with light cleaning, laundry, dishes, sanitizing bottles and nursing equipment, and vacuuming.

Educational Support

Education reduces stress and anxiety. Topics to discuss might include sleeping styles, baby-wearing, umbilical cord care, diapering, bathing, tummy time, questions for the doctor, and parenting techniques.

Family Support

Adding to the family, whether this is your first child or fifth, creates changes to the family dynamic. I will help smooth this transition by incorporating each family member, highlighting each individual’s vital role in the care and support of the new baby.

Lactation Support

Breastfeeding can be very rewarding and also a challenge for some new parents and babies. I will help to educate and give tips for success. If you prefer bottle feeding, I can help there, too!

Meal Preparation

Need a fridge full of prepared snacks? Want a nutritious meal, but are recovering from a difficult birth or a cesarean? As your doula, I can prepare a warm, home-cooked meal for your family.

Sibling Care

As your postpartum doula, my role is to help support you and your entire family during your postpartum period. I am happy to help with older child and sibling care.

Overnight Support

At this time, except in special circumstances, we donโ€™t offer night-time support. If you would like a resource for night-time nannies, please let us know.
