Description
The postpartum period is often described as a time of adjustment, but it is also a time when risk is still very real and not always recognized. Nearly half of maternal deaths happen within the first day after birth, and many more occur in the days and weeks that follow, often after families have already left medical care. Complications like hemorrhage, hypertension, and infection tend to show up early. At the same time, more pregnant and postpartum women in the United States are dying from homicide and suicide than from any single medical cause.
When you pause and consider that, it changes how we think about postpartum care. Many of these moments happen at home, in between visits, when families are trying to make sense of what they are experiencing.
If your work brings you into contact with families during this time, you are part of that picture. No single role sees everything, and families experience their care as one continuous journey across providers and settings.
This gathering is a chance to step back and look at that together. We’ll talk about where gaps in care are showing up, what support can look like in real life once families are home, and how postpartum doulas can work alongside other professionals. You’ll also leave with simple, practical resources you can use in your own work.
Join us for this conversation and this chance to connect, share perspectives, and strengthen how we support families during a vulnerable time.
If you interact or work with pregnant or postpartum families in any capacity, your perspective matters.
